Margaret Lawrence Gallery
LAMP TABLE CHAIR BIG PAINTING

Exhibition Opening: Thursday 29 April 6pm - 8pm Exhibition Dates: 30 April to 29 May 2010

Artists: Doug Heslop, Christopher LG Hill,
Lou Hubbard, Veronica Kent, Lizzy Newman,
Nicki Wynnychuk.

Lamp Table Chair Big Painting sees six diverse artists responding to the iconic 1994 work of Martin Kippenberger, The Happy End of Franz Kafka’s “Amerika”, and was initially conceived to explore some of the tropes of collective activity including anonymity and group consciousness. Kippenberger was nominated as a point of departure because of his refusal to be identified by a particular style and because his penchant for mixing media, styles and processes has influenced subsequent generations of artists – largely because he believed no style or artist's work was off limits for appropriation.

OPERAL VACANCY

- Think of a painting on a wall (as a traditional format)
- Now remove the painting
- Make a support for the space it once occupied

# Supports could be
- An apparatus to hold what was once present…
- A shift to illuminate the space it once occupied…
- The pictorial investment of transitional objects…
- Stations where the painting returns momentarily…

- The show is not interested in the residual or the memory of painting.
- The new support should take the place of painting with its fleshy-chromatic-plastic-structural-goodness-intact.

- The mechanisms involved in what it means to physically present a painting.

- Not so much a painting, then, presenting itself, as the representation, the enacting of painting.

- THE SHOW AIMS TO TEST THE CAPACITY OF CERTAIN THINGS TO REPRESENT PAINTING, OR MORE ACCURATELY, THE CAPACITY OF SUCH REPRESENTATION TO BE CONVEYED BY THIS OBJECT OR THAT DEVICE.

- WHATS ENOUGH OR TOO MUCH FOR IT TO APPEAR, WHEN HUNG ON THE WALL, AS A CREDIBLE SUPPORT FOR A PAINTING?

Structural Integrity (2010 Next Wave Festival) Arts House
Meat Market
5 Blackwood Street
North Melbourne

Structural Integrity is a large-scale exhibition and cultural exchange initiative, and a keynote project in the 2010 Next Wave Festival.

Structural Integrity will bring together six Australian and five Asian artist-run initiatives to explore independent and emerging arts culture across the region.

As the first ever showcase of emerging arts practice from Asia in the Next Wave Festival, Structural Integrity will highlight the shared, as well as distinctive characteristics of grassroots artistic culture across the region. The exhibition will provide a snapshot view of emerging arts practice in today’s rapidly changing artistic and geo-cultural context.

Also at Arts House during Next Wave is ‘PrivateDances’ – an immersive and celebratory event exploring intimate encounters with dance.

Meanwhile, Mogo Zoo, the creative team behind ‘The Tent’, will continue their investigation of space and theatre with ‘Hole in the Wall’. See Next Wave for further information.

Arts House is proud to continue its partnership with Next Wave in supporting the next generation of Australia’s artists and audiences.

For Structural Integrity Next Wave is proud to present new work, developed on-site, by:
